LESSONS ON THE FAR EAST

Lessons on the Far East attempts to blur the lines of reality and performance through the staging of an academic lecture. In this way it intends to establish an altogether new form of debate. This project took place under the auspices of the Honourable East India Institute (HEII), a new academic organization designed to explore ways of researching and reexamining the achievements as well as the failures of scholarship in Far Eastern Studies. The Institute was set up in 2009 in Honningsvik, Norway. Lessons on the Far East was realized jointly by Thomas S. Mullaney, Associate Professor of Chinese History at Stanford University, and Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. Their performance revealed leftover problems stemming from the time when the concept of "Far East" was formed, and it resonated with the new regionalism that is emerging in today's global context.

The Honourable East India Institute (HEII) has assembled a team of experts in the study of East and Southeast Asian problems. They come from various disciplinary backgrounds: archaeology, sociology, science, art history, literature, architecture, history, philosophy, etc. Thanks to a generous grant from an anonymous organization, this group of intellectuals will soon depart on an expedition to Brunei. On this day, they share the new progress of their research itinerary with the Bay Area public at the Kadist Art Foundation.
